Shadow Hacker is book #1 of the duology The Clone-zone Cycle, comprising Shadow Hacker and Shadow Raider.
Julian Donaldson designs network and surveillance systems for a Brisbane specialist network firm, and automatically becomes a Person of Interest for the Police when a bank in Sydney is robbed after the secure surveillance system, only recently installed, is expertly bypassed... even though there is no evidence that he had anything to do with the robbery.
gifHe does not like being treated as a suspect and uses his technical skills – including his skill as a hacker, although he certainly does not tell the Police about that! – to research the way the surveillance system was compromised, and discovers the way that the robbers had hacked into the system.  This enables him to trace the computer used for the hacking work and the Police are able to focus on catching the robbers, and he also manages to harden the system against future hack attacks.  The Police team is very impressed with his work.
He becomes a technical adviser for the Brisbane Police in cases of computer crime, and helps them to catch illegal commercial hackers.  He doesn’t like Police arresting hackers ( people not unlike himself ), but ignoring the crooks who fund them.  This coincides with the gradual development of a freak time-distortion effect using a highly-modified wireless network shield.  He uses this to enter a shadowy fringe world, where he is completely invisible to his victims, as they are to him.  It is a slightly time-shifted dimensional ‘bubble’ and he can see stationary objects.  Julian becomes a Shadow World burglar to gain devastating evidence against criminal ‘identities’ – men with little tolerance for security threats.
Are his Police colleagues impressed?  No, they are not!  They strongly suspect that his evidence – welcome though it may be – is obtained by illegal methods, because they can’t see any conventional way for it to have been obtained...  and his skill as a known hacker also makes them regard him with suspicion.
