This is the fourth book of a tetralogy named Vortex Evolution.  The tetralogy comprises The Quantum Elbow, Storm Pilgrim, Quantum Heritage, and Vortex Eye.

Anna Bennett, after losing her son to the assassination of the previous owner of Gadson Aerospace, active on both Earth and on Earth’s only settler world, Hyacinth, is nearing retirement age but no longer has a natural heir.  She must train a successor to be the new owner, as well as restructure the company to be more resistant to constant political and commercial pressures from Earth.  Hyacinth must become more than just a ‘Client World’ of Earth.

Anna’s major contribution to Gadson success, and Hyacinth economic stability, has been in the field of Quantum Elbow (QE) mining – particularly asteroid mining – on a small scale suitable for Hyacinth’s small economy.  Settlement of a second world – Saxus – is planned to relieve population pressure on Earth.  Anna must help her team to face this great challenge.  Earth wants Saxus settled on a much grander scale than was used to settle Hyacinth, but QE drive technology is still small-scale, so settling new worlds will not relieve population pressures on Earth, as loudly claimed by politicians.  All new settlements must start small, and grow slowly, allowing settlers to build infrastructure as needed.  They can never be dumping-grounds for Earth’s unwanted billions.
